The Del Ray neighborhood is located just to the north of Rosemont across Braddock Road. It began as the communities of Del Ray, St. Elmo, Mt. Ida, and Hume which united to form the Town of Potomac in 1908. In 1930, the Town was annexed by the City of Alexandria. Del Ray is bounded by Russell Road, W. Glebe Road, Jefferson Davis Highway (Rt. 1) and Braddock Road. Today, it is a vibrant, eclectic community that lives up to its slogan “Where Main Street Still Exists.” The heart of the neighborhood is Mt. Vernon Avenue (the “Avenue”) that offers fantastic locally owned shops and restaurants and is the gathering place for the community to celebrate such events as First Thursday, Art on the Avenue and the Annual Halloween Parade. Housing styles range from early 1900s bungalows and farmhouses, 1940s rowhouses, 1970/1980s townhomes, condominium conversions and new construction.
